Chapter 15
Miles closed the door behind one of the solemn guys, and I lifted the covers from the trays that filled the tea cart. Sandwiches, scones, biscuitsâwhich looked suspiciously like cookies, to meâlittle cakes, the obligatory pot of hot water, and tea, of course.
âIâm starving,â I commented, as he joined me.
âLunch feels like a long time ago,â Miles agreed. âThatâs understandable, seeing as this has been one of our busier days.â
âI was disappointed to find that the head gardener knew almost as little about Finn, as anyone else,â I said ruefully, as I poured steaming water into the two cups.
âI wouldnât say I was surprised,â Miles commented, as he filled plates for us both, and I stirred the tea leaf filled infuser spoon in first one cup, then the other. âHe did know Finn had no vehicle, but that he had the use of one, when he needed it.â
âAll the gardening vehicles are accounted for, so we know he didnât leave in one this time,â I conceded. âIâd still like to know where he went, the times he did leave the manor. Youâd think someone would at least know if he spent his days-off in his cottage, or somewhere else.â
âThere was much speculation regarding that,â Miles shook his head a little. âI take it that was all it was?â
âI heard so many tones today, my ears are practically ringing with them,â I replied. âThere wasnât much else. As unbelievable as it is, Iâm about to decide we knew him better than anyone else.â
âAs sad as that is, I guess thatâs how he wanted it,â Miles remarked.
âI canât imagine wanting that,â I said, then stopped. âNo, thatâs not the truth. I had no interest in investing in any new relationships either, but then I met you. After that, you were all I wanted.â
âAnd now, you have me,â Miles smiled, as he slid a plate in front of me, and kissed my cheek. âAlways.â
âGood, because Iâd prefer not to hold you against your will,â I smiled back, as I set a cup of tea beside each of our meals. âAlthough I certainly would, if I had to.â
âThereâs no need of that,â Miles affirmed, as he returned my hug. âIâm more than willing. Although⦠for the sake of eating while itâs hot, you might want to save some holding for later.â
âFine,â I laughed. âBut Iâm getting right back to it, after weâre through.â
âIâm holding you to that,â Miles smiled, then we both turned our attention to the delicious selection in front of us. The food was excellent, and we were both hungry. We spent the next several minutes doing justice to our meals.
âSo whatâs next on our agenda?â I finally asked, as we set aside our empty plates, and I brewed two fresh cups of tea. âIn relation to our investigations, I mean.â
âThereâs not likely to be time before dinner, but how would you like to visit Ireland tomorrow?â
âIâd love that,â I enthused. âEven if the address on the magazine in Finnâs cottage wasnât located there, Iâd vote for that.
